Did You Know?

Biologists and veterinarians are both harnessing the benefits of homeopathic remedies.

The essential role of homeopathy should not be overlooked, whether it be in regard to areas of human health and personal development or other areas, such as animal health and environmental sustainability.

Homeopathy has been widely studied for over 200 years. In the last four decades, the number of scientific studies significantly increased.

Thanks to the work of Dr. Iris Bell M.D., Ph.D. (University of Arizona College of Medicine), Peter Gold, and Mary Lou Sullivan, we can access the most comprehensive list of over 6,000 scientific researches available in the field.

Many studies demonstrate the benefits of using homeopathy to cure a wide range of conditions. The following summaries are just a few of the most outstanding cases.

The studies have been published in PubMed, an online database from The United States National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health, and other renowned medical journals and institutions.

Even though the presented studies are categorized by diseases, it is essential to remember that there are no standard homeopathic treatment protocols for any given diagnosis nor any specific medicine for any particular disease.

All kinds of medicines have to be individualized according to the uniqueness of the individual’s symptoms.

Addiction And Detox

Three different cohort studies in Boston, MA indicated the benefits of the homeopathic medicine Nux vomica in the treatment of post-acute withdrawal syndrome. The immediate benefit is the reduction of frequency and intensity of cravings consistently in all three treatment groups: all participants reported an immediate reduction in cravings. In the first two cohorts, those who chose to use homeopathy completed a six-month substance abuse treatment program at nearly twice the rate of those who did not, and results in the third cohort were also promising.

Butehorn L. “Post-acute withdrawal syndrome, relapse prevention, and homeopathy. Alt Comp Therapies “.

The homeopathic medicine Nux vomica is an effective treatment option for withdrawal syndrome and other symptoms associated with substance-induced liver toxicity. Its affinity for the hepatic and neurological system has been well documented and also animal studies demonstrate that it is very effective in reducing alcohol cravings.

At the University of Kalyani in West Bengal, India researchers tested the capacity of the homeopathic remedy Arsenicum album 30C to assist in the removal of arsenic in 123 people suffering from arsenic toxicity from groundwater contamination. Given in intervals for 7 and 10 days, at the end of each interval the level of arsenic in the blood and urine, as well as the activity of various toxicity markers, was assessed in all subjects. The analysis of the results showed that the use of the homeopathic remedy was associated with a statistically significant reduction in blood and urinary arsenic, and normalization of arsenic-associated toxicity markers.

In a randomized controlled trial, the homeopathic remedies Arsenicum album 6C and 30C were given to mice prior to exposure to material doses of arsenic trioxide. Mice were divided into 6 groups with 1 group receiving 6C Arsenicum album, another group receiving 30C Arsenicum album, and the remaining 4 groups receiving various control substances. Cellular and various biochemical parameters such as acid and alkaline phosphatases, aspartate and alanine aminotransferases, glutathione, lipid peroxidation, catalase and succinate dehydrogenase were assessed at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days from the beginning of the study. After the analysis of the results, the study concluded that both the 6C and 30C potencies of Arsenicum album provided protection against the effects of arsenic trioxide, with the 30C providing a slightly better level of protection than the 6ch.  Another study from the University of Kalyani in India’s West Bengal was part of an ongoing series of trials looking at the use of homeopathically potentized arsenic to protect against the effects of exposure to material doses of arsenic. Arsenicum album 30C and 200C have already been demonstrated to be effective against toxicity in previous experiments. In this particular study, the influence of the antibiotic actinomycin D on the protective effects of the homeopathic medicines was assessed.

Compared to controls it was found that the use of the antibiotic did inhibit the protective effects of Arsenicum album 30C and 200C against arsenic toxicity. S Datta, P Mallick

In this trial, the homeopathic remedy Arsenicum album was investigated for its possible effect on arsenic-induced elevations of the antinuclear antibody (ANA).

Participants were selected from arsenic-affected villages in India’s West Bengal and were randomly assigned to receive either Arsenicum album or placebo. After 2 months of the administration, it was found that not only did the remedy provide superior results in reducing the ANA titre, it also showed a correction of arsenic-induced hematological changes such as total count of red blood cells and white blood cells, hemoglobin content, packed cell volume, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and blood sugar level.

ADHD

43 children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were alternately assigned to either placebo or homeopathic treatment in a double-blind study to determine the effectiveness of homeopathy for this disorder

The study demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the homeopathy group compared to the placebo group.

Lamont J. “Homeopathic treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—a controlled study.”

A double-blind placebo-controlled study of 115 children diagnosed with ADHD in Switzerland proved positive results after a course of individualized homeopathic treatment over a period of 3 months.

Anxiety and Depression

This study suggests the positive therapeutic use of homeopathy in anxiety and depression. 12 cases of major depression and/or anxiety. The clinical response suggests that the use of homeopathy is effective with a 50% reduction through the standardized validated tests in mild and severe conditions.

Davidson J, Morrison R, Shore J, et al. “Homeopathic treatment of depression and anxiety.”

Different studies suggest that homeopathic medicine is comparable to conventional antidepressants. In the following study, 91 patients were randomly assigned to a double-blind treatment with individualized homeopathic medicines or Fluoxetine (conventional antidepressant).

The antidepressants group had a high rate of treatment interruption due to the side effects.

The data provided that homeopathy was not inferior to antidepressants.

Adler UC, Paiva NMP, Cesar AT, et al.“Homeopathic Individualized Q-Potencies versus Fluoxetine for Moderate to Severe Depression: Double-Blind, Randomized Non-Inferiority Trial.“

A six weeks study on individualized homeopathic treatment for moderate to severe depression in one hundred and thirty-three perimenopausal and menopausal women concluded that homeopathic treatment had a similar effect as the conventional drug Fluoxetine in decreasing depression levels but a greater effect in decreasing general menopausal symptoms.

Macias-Cortes EC, Llanes-Gonzalez L, Aguilar-Faisal L et al. “Individualized Homeopathic Treatment and Fluoxetine for Moderate to Severe Depression in Peri- and Postmenopausal Women (HOMDEP-MENOP Study): A Randomized, Double-Dummy, Double-Blind, Placebo Controlled Trial.”

In a multiple randomized controlled trial, over a period of 12 months 162 patients ranging from 18 to 85 years of age with moderate to severe anxiety or depression. One-third of patients were randomly selected for an offer of treatment provided by a homeopath. The group using homeopathic medicines showed a significant moderate reduction of the depression and anxiety levels that were not present in the control group.

One hundred and ten patients were recruited and 87 (79.1%) suffered from depression and anxiety. Patients who consulted a GP-Homeopath were more likely to have clinical improvement after 12 months than those in the group that used only conventional treatment. Patients who consulted a GP-Homeopath reported less psychotropic drug use and benzodiazepine use than the control group.

Danno K, Duru G & Vetel JM. “Management of Anxiety and Depressive Disorders in Patients ≥ 65 Years of Age by Homeopath General Practitioners versus Conventional General Practitioners, with Overview of the EPI3-LASER Study Results.”

710 patients in general practice in France participated in an epidemiological cohort study (EPI3) that compared utilization of conventional psychotropic drugs among patients seeking care for anxiety and depression disorders (ADDs) from general practitioners (GPs) who strictly prescribe conventional medicines (GP-CM), regularly prescribe homeopathy in a mixed practice (GP-Mx), or are certified homeopathic GPs (GP-Ho). Adjusted multivariate analyses showed those patients with ADD, who chose to consult GPs prescribing homeopathy reported less use of psychotropic drugs and were more likely to experience clinical improvement, than patients managed with conventional care.

From thirty databases/sources 18 were used to identify studies reporting on homeopathy in depression. Two double-blind placebo-controlled trials of homeopathic medicinal products (HMPs) for depression were assessed. The first trial of 91 patients found that homeopathy was non-inferior to fluoxetine at 4 and 8 weeks. The second trial with 133 patients found that it was comparable to fluoxetine (p = 0.082) and superior to placebo at 6 weeks (p < 0.005). A cohort study of patients receiving homeopathic treatment reported significantly lower consumption of psychotropic drugs and improved depression. Patient-reported outcomes showed at least moderate improvement in 10 of 12 uncontrolled studies. All adverse events were mild or moderate, and transient. No evidence suggested treatment was unsafe.

Back Pain And Other Musculoskeletal disorders

In France, a large-scale study on patients with musculoskeletal disorders demonstrated a 50% reduced use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and significantly less use of NSAIDs when homeopathic medicines were prescribed. The use of homeopathy showed long-term effects of pain reduction and marked improvement of quality of life.

Rossignol M, Begaud B, Engel P et al. “Impact of physician preferences for homeopathic or conventional medicines on patients with musculoskeletal disorders.”

Patients with a variety of musculoskeletal disorders (osteoarthritis, rheumatism, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, tendinitis, rotary cuff syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, intervertebral disc disorders, neck pain, torticollis, and spinal stenosis) participated in the year-long study in France. The group treated with homeopathy used 25% fewer narcotics and half as many Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as the conventionally treated patients. There were fewer adverse events in the homeopathic treatment group.

Rossignol M, Begaud B, Engel P et al. “Impact of physician preferences for homeopathic or conventional medicines on patients with musculoskeletal disorders: results from the EP13-MSD cohort”.

In a two-year multicenter study performed in Germany 129 adults were treated by 48 physicians. The patients mainly had chronic low back pain and other chronic diseases. They received an individualized homeopathic treatment. The study revealed that disease severity was significantly reduced as was the utilization of conventional treatments and health services. The homeopathic treatment group also reported a higher quality of life, both in physical and mental component scales.

Lower back pain

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 105 days long 137 patients with lower back pain received homeopathic treatment. The study concluded homeopathy provides superior relief from back pain when compared with placebo.

Beer AM, Fey S, Zimmer M et al. “Effectiveness and safety of a homeopathic drug combination in the treatment of chronic low back pain: a doubleblind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.”

In this controlled, randomized, prospective study, 43 people with chronic low back pain were treated for two months either by homeopathy or by standardized physiotherapy. The analysis based on the initial and final clinical investigations, an Oswestry questionnaire, and a visual analog scale, found that the most successful method of treatment was homeopathy.

Endometriosis associated pelvic pain

In this study, the homeopathic treatment of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain (EAPP) was evaluated.

Considering the EAPP global score (VAS: range 0 to 50) decreased by 12.82 (P<0.001) in the group treated with potentized estrogen from baseline to week 24. The group that used the homeopathic remedy also exhibited partial score (VAS: range 0 to 10) reduction in three EAPP modalities: dysmenorrhea (3.28; P<0.001), non-cyclic pelvic pain (2.71; P=0.009), and cyclic bowel pain (3.40; P<0.001). The placebo group did not show any significant changes in EAPP global or partial scores. In addition, the homeopathic group showed significant improvement in three of eight SF-36 domains (bodily pain, vitality and mental health) and depression symptoms (BDI). The placebo group showed no significant improvement in this regard.

The study concluded that homeopathy was significantly more effective than placebo for reducing endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.

The antitumorigenic activity of homeopathic medicine was evaluated.

The results showed that the homeopathic remedy Thuja successfully induced cancer cell death (apoptosis) in functional p53-expressing mammary epithelial carcinoma cells. Abrogation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), prevention of p53-activation, knockdown of p53 or inhibition of its functional activity significantly abridged ROS generation. This study concluded that homeopathic medicine induces mammary epithelial carcinoma cell death.

An in vitro and in vivo study of the effect of homeopathy on human brain cancer. The researchers treated human brain cancer and HL-60 leukemia cells, normal B-lymphoid cells, and murine melanoma cells in vitro with different concentrations of the homeopathic medication Ruta in combination with Ca3(PO4)2. Fifteen patients diagnosed with intracranial tumours were treated with Ruta 6 and Ca3(PO4)2. The homeopathic medicine initiated cancer cell death by telomere erosion and completed through mitotic catastrophe events. The study concluded that Ruta in combination with Ca3(PO4)2 could be used for effective treatment of brain cancers, particularly glioma.

In an in vitro study, homeopathic medicine Phytolacca decandra was tested for its possible anticancer potential in skin melanoma. Results showed that PD administration caused a remarkable reduction in proliferation of A375 cells, without showing much cytotoxicity (toxicity to surrounding cells) on peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Generation of ROS and DNA damage, which made the cancer cells prone to apoptosis (cell death), were found to be enhanced in PD-treated cells. The study demonstrated the anticancer potential of the homeopathic remedy Phytolacca.

An in vitro study selected homeopathic remedies that caused the death of 5000 breast cancer cell lines in the laboratory for periods of between 1 to 4 days (experiment repeated 3 times), similar to the effect of chemotherapy, but without affecting normal cells. These effects were accompanied by altered expression of the cell cycle regulatory proteins, including downregulation of phosphorylated Rb and up-regulation of the CDK inhibitor p27, which were likely responsible for the cell cycle delay/arrest as well as induction of the apoptotic cascade that manifested in the activation of caspase 7 and cleavage of PARP in the treated cells.

Diabetes

At the University of Verona in Italy researchers designed this observational study to compare the effects of homeopathic treatment with conventional treatment for diabetic neuropathy. Over a 12 month period, 32 patients were treated with homeopathy and 29 patients were given conventional drug therapy. All of them were assessed for clinical symptoms and quality of life at baseline, 6 months and 12 months after the treatment.

In both groups, there was noted improvement from baseline polyneuropathy symptoms but only those treated homeopathically reached outcomes that were statistically significant.

Both groups experienced improvements in blood pressure and body weight as well as levels of fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin but only those treated with homeopathy noted improvement in quality of life scores over the period of the study. The homeopathic treatment was also more economical than the conventional drug alternative.

Fibromyalgia

A double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial of individualized homeopathy evaluating 53 women with fibromyalgia demonstrate that the active group on individualized homeopathy showed a greater reduction in tender point count and tender point pain, better fibromyalgia-related quality of life, improved global health and a trend toward less depression.

Bell IR, Lewis DA II, Brooks AJ, et al. “Improved Clinical Status in Fibromyalgia Patients Treated with Individualized Homeopathic Remedies versus Placebo.” Rheumatology 2004;43(5):577–82.

A 4-month randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial of daily orally administered individualized homeopathy in physician-confirmed FM, with an additional 2-month optional crossover phase of 48 patients with fibromyalgia using individualized homeopathic medicine demonstrated EEG changes showing progressive amplification of host responses. The study demonstrated a significant increase in signal strength for the homeopathic group, while the placebo group demonstrated a decrease in global alpha-1 and alpha-2 activity (p=0.003).

Bell IR, Lewis DA, Lewis SE, et al. “EEG Alpha Sensitization in Individualized Homeopathic Treatment of Fibromyalgia.” Int J Neuroscience 2004;114(9):1195–1220.

53 patients took part in 3 months double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial with physician-confirmed fibromyalgia characterized initial central nervous system responses to administration of homeopathic medicines in the right prefrontal region. Cordance findings correlated with subsequently reduced pain (p=0.03), better global health (p=0.10), and trait absorption (p=0.012) suggesting that prefrontal EEG-C’s provide a reliable early biomarker of individualized homeopathic medicine response.

Bell IR, Lewis DA, Schwartz GE, et al. “Electroencephalographic Cordance Patterns Distinguish Exceptional Clinical Responders with Fibromyalgia to Individualized Homeopathic Medicines.”

47 patients with fibromyalgia were recruited for this pragmatic parallel-group randomized controlled trial. They were randomly treated with or without adjunctive homeopathic care. The drop-out rate was significantly lower in the homeopathic care group. There was a significantly greater mean reduction of total function score in the homeopathic group when compared with the conventional medication group. The homeopathic group had significantly greater reductions in the McGill pain score, and fatigue and tiredness upon waking scores. There were no reported adverse events.

Menopause

Menopause is seen as a highly variable adjustment phase. Some women experience difficult symptoms that can significantly impact the quality of life and in breast cancer, the adjustment phase can be intensified and prolonged by anti-estrogen medication. Homeopathy has been delivered within the National Health Service since its inception and has been used to alleviate menopausal symptoms both in the climacteric and more recently in breast cancer survivors. Individualized treatment by a homeopath, regarded as the gold standard of homeopathic care, is a complex intervention where the homeopathic medicine is matched to a woman presenting with a range of symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep and mood disturbance, joint pains and fatigue.

Sinus Infection

A randomized placebo-controlled study in the treatment of sinusitis examined the efficacy and safety of homeopathic medicine in 42 participants.

The homeopathical medicine versus placebo subjects exhibited significant differences in changes from baseline to end of study and improvement in nasal congestion, sinus pain, sinus pressure, and headache at 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, persisting at 60 minutes for nasal congestion and sinus pain (P < .05)

Bernstein JA, et al. “A randomized, double-blind, parallel trial comparing capsaicin nasal spray with placebo in subjects with a significant component of nonallergic rhinitis.”

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial analyzed the effectiveness of homeopathic medication in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS). 113 patients with radiography-confirmed AMS participated in a 22 day trial with 8 weeks follow-up.

The homeopathic medication caused a significant reduction in the sinusitis severity score (SSS) total score compared with placebo (5.8 ± 2.3 [6.0] points vs 2.3 ± 1.8 [2.0] points; P < .0001) on the seventh day. On day 21, 68.4% of the homeopathic treatment group noted complete remission of AMS symptoms compared with only 8.9% for the placebo group. Confirming the therapeutic effect of homeopathic medicine.

Trauma

15 people suffering from orthopedic trauma were treated in a medical center with homeopathy, in addition to standard medical treatment. The treatment started 24 hours after admission. All patients initially received Arnica 200C and anxiety was treated with other homeopathic remedies all in 200C potency. After one day of the treatment, the majority of patients reported a reduction in pain and anxiety. At discharge, 67% of patients rated the homeopathic treatment as successful.

50 people with persistent mild traumatic brain injury participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial and were treated either with their constitutional homeopathic remedy or placebo. The study concluded that homeopathy alone or in combination with conventional therapies significantly improves post-traumatic symptoms.

Chapman EH. “Homeopathic treatment of patients with persistent mild traumatic brain injury.”

A case series provides favourable results of homeopathic treatment in patients in the Emergency Department and wards after multiple casualty incidents. Homeopathy was demonstrated effective as compared with placebo in improving long-term survival in severely ill septic patients and in hastening extubation ICU patients.

Thalassemia

38 people suffering from thalassemia who were taking hydroxyurea, were given individualized homeopathic treatment. The effects of this additional treatment were compared to the outcomes of another 38 people suffering from thalassemia who used hydroxyurea alone. The assessment at baseline and at 3 months after starting the homeopathic treatment for a range of hematological and clinical parameters showed that those people using the combined treatment had an increase in levels of fetal hemoglobin over those on hydroxyurea alone with also a reduction in serum ferritin. The homeopathic group also had an improvement in general health with a longer period allowed between blood transfusions.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

A placebo-controlled randomized trial examined the efficacy of using homeopathy to treat young children with URIs and determined that there was a significant advantage gained by using homeopathy when compared with placebo. Symptoms of sneezing and cough, as well as the accumulated cold scores, were significantly improved at both the first and the second assessments among those receiving the homeopathic treatment compared to those in the placebo group. This study showed that homeopathic medicine is effective in reducing the severity of cold symptoms within the first day after beginning treatment.4

Jacobs J, Taylor JA, “A randomized controlled trial of a homeopathic syrup in the treatment of cold symptoms in young children.”

This study demonstrated a clinically relevant effect of individualized homeopathic care in the prevention of URTI in children. 169 children under 10 years of age, diagnosed with URTI, were randomly assigned to receive either homeopathic treatment or allow them to utilize self-selected conventional therapies.

The difference in the median number of days with URTI symptoms was statistically significant with 8 days in the homeopathic group and 13 days in the control group(p = 0.006).5

Veterinary Homeopathy

Due to the current global crises of antibiotic-resistant germs (i.e., bacteria, fungi), which develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, the WHO announced antibiotic resistance as one of the biggest threats to the public’s health, food security, and development.

In the U.S. alone, such germs cause more than 2 million infections and 23,000 deaths per year. And according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 80 percent of all antibiotics in the U.S. are used in the field of agriculture.

With that in mind, homeopathy could be of incredible help in reestablishing animal health.

Thanks to the extensive collection of the peer-reviewed studies conducted by A. Sundrum Ph.D. and C. Doehring, you can explore the positive effects of homeopathy over the last 30 years here: “Efficacy of homeopathy in livestock according to peer-reviewed publications from 1981 to 2014.”

Agro-homeopathy

Facing the fast deterioration of our natural ecosystems, the latest scientific research in homeopathy brings new hope for possible solutions.

Indeed, different scientists, such as Sandhimita Mondal, the head of the Department of Microbiology of the Techno India University, and biologist Nina Ximenes, featured in Scientific American, are strongly advocating the positive effect of agro-homeopathy for our food safety, ecosystem’s health, and sustainability.
